Reuters, 8 February – The United States must to explain its role in last year’s explosions on the undersea Nord Stream gas pipelines, according to the Russian foreign ministry on Wednesday.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova requested the White House to respond to the “evidence” that had been supplied in response to an earlier Wednesday report that claimed the United States was responsible for the explosions.
The claim that the United States was involved in the explosions was made in a story by American investigative journalist Seymour Hersh, which Reuters was unable to confirm.
Hersh’s account was “utterly false and pure fiction,” according to the White House, which stated this on Wednesday.
Moscow has often claimed, without presenting proof, that the West was responsible for the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipeline explosions in September. These multibillion-dollar infrastructure projects delivered Russian gas to Germany under the Baltic Sea.
These allegations have been refuted by Western officials.
Zakharova summarized Hersh’s main allegations regarding the suspected U.S. involvement in a post on her Telegram page and stated, “The White House must now reply on all these facts.”
Swedish and Danish investigators, whose exclusive economic zones the explosions happened in, have concluded the ruptures were caused by sabotage but have not identified the perpetrator.
Russia claimed that the nations “have something to hide” and deliberately exclude it from the probe.
Although Nord Stream 2 was built to double the amount of gas Russia could send to Germany directly under the sea, it was never put into operation because Berlin shelved certification just days before Moscow sent troops into Ukraine in February. Construction of Nord Stream 2 was finished in September 2021.
